Can CBD Help with Anxiety?

Welcome to the Canax CBD blog!

So far, we’ve covered a range of topics within our blogs, from menopause to perimenopause and HRT to pain. We’ve also heard touching stories from customers who’ve been amazed at how our CBD has helped them.

But one topic we haven’t explained yet, and one that is a common question among the general public, is anxiety, and whether or not CBD can be an effective remedy for quelling anxiety symptoms.

So, today we’ll explore what anxiety is and the forms it can take, the research around the use of CBD to help with anxiety symptoms, and of course, we’ll show you where you can purchase CBD edibles.

What is Anxiety?

Anxiety is a complex beast but at its most basic level, it’s the feeling of unease, worry, or fear. It can range in severity from mild and controllable to severe and debilitating, and it’s often much more than simply being worried about something happening in your life.

The different forms anxiety can take are:

Generalised Anxiety Disorder – this is characterised as being excessively anxious about two or more aspects of your life. So rather than worrying about something most people would feel uneasy about like a job interview or moving house, sufferers are worried about numerous things on a regular basis.

Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (also known as OCD) – OCD is having a tendency towards excessive orderliness and attention to detail, so much so that it is a hindrance to your life. For the most part it means that you can’t settle or be satisfied unless everything is deemed to be “perfect”.

Panic Disorder – this is a mental health condition which means you have panic attacks on a regular basis. It’s the feeling of being out of control and sufferers often fear death or impending doom during a panic attack.

Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (also known as PTSD) – PTSD is caused by a traumatic experience. This can be anything from an abusive relationship to a bad work experience, and it can be brought about due to pretty much any negative event in your life. Sufferers may have intense feelings that disturb them well after the event has taken place and they may relive it through flashbacks or nightmares. This often leads to feelings of intense sadness, fear, or anger, as well as feeling detached from other people.

Social Phobia (also known as Social Anxiety Disorder) – and finally, social phobia is an overwhelming fear of social situations. This can include meeting strangers or friends and it can occur when speaking to people in any situation.

All of the above can lead to symptoms such as shortness of breath and dizziness, and for many, these symptoms can be extremely hard to live with.

Can CBD Help with Anxiety?

To answer this question, we need to look at scientific research carried out in the field. A good example of this is a review carried out in 2015 which states that CBD interacts with the cannabinoid type 1 receptor (CB1R), the serotonin 5-HT1A receptor, and other important brain receptors that regulate fear and anxiety-induced behaviours.

The review found preclinical and clinical evidence that overwhelmingly established that CBD is an effective treatment for all of the above kinds of anxiety disorders because of the positive interaction with these receptors.

A further study was carried out in 2020, with 397 adults in New Zealand receiving medical CBD prescriptions for a variety of ailments such as anxiety and other mental health symptoms. Every single group reported improvements in their overall quality of life after a mere 3 weeks of CBD treatment, and those who received CBD for anxiety or depression experienced improvements in their ability to perform daily functions. The participants also reported a reduction in pain associated with anxiety or depression.

A total of 70% reported satisfaction from the treatment, with only 9.9% reporting adverse effects. It’s worth noting that these effects were minimal and tended to be something along the lines of vivid dreams.

These studies are just two examples from a plethora of other research that indeed proves the link between easing anxiety symptoms of all kinds through the use of CBD.
